Both are genuine lime-based Italian finishes, and people often use the words interchangeably, but they give very different results. Choosing between them comes down to the look you want and the feel of the room.
Marmorino
Marmorino is a lime and marble-dust plaster with a soft, natural surface. It reads as a matte to low-satin finish with a subtle, cloudy movement rather than a high shine. It feels calm and understated, it is more forgiving on walls that are not perfectly flat, and it suits a wide range of interiors, from warm and rustic to quietly modern. It is also a sensible choice for larger areas where a full high polish might feel too much.

Stucco Veneziano
Stucco veneziano is the classic polished Venetian plaster. Built up in very thin layers and burnished hard, it develops a smooth, almost marble-like surface with real depth and a glossy sheen that shifts as the light moves across it. It is more formal and more dramatic, and it rewards a flat, well-prepared wall and a feature position where it can be seen and lit. It takes more coats and more skill to bring up the polish, which is reflected in the cost.
How to choose
- Want calm and tactile? Marmorino. It sits back and adds texture without demanding attention.
- Want a statement? Stucco veneziano. The polish and depth make it the focal point of a room.
- Large walls or less-than-perfect surfaces? Marmorino is more forgiving.
- A lit feature wall or entry? Stucco veneziano comes alive where light can play across it.
